Oval Medical is a cutting edge parenteral-technology company based in Cambridge, UK. Oval was founded by Matthew Young in 2009 with the following key aims:

  • To design an autoinjector that is safe and easy to use in all patient populations.
  • To provide a less contaminating environment for the storage of all drugs including fragile biologics
  • To significantly improve the quality and reliability of autoinjectors

A team of world-leading experts has been pulled together to deliver their revolutionary technology and since 2009 Oval is continuously proving to be a global success. Oval Medical has established a quality management system that complies with the requirements of BS EN 13485:2012, and works with the guidelines and principles from:

  • FDA 21 CFR Pt 820
  • Medical Device Directive 93/42/EEC
  • ANSI/AAMI HE75

In December 2016, Oval was acquired by SMC Ltd., a global contract manufacturer of finished medical devices. The combination of Oval’s design and development capability and SMC’s years of experience in global manufacturing of single patient devices ensures a high level of reliability in product performance and a fast route to market.

Barbara Lead

Chief Executive Officer

Barbara Lead has over twenty years’ experience in leading pharmaceutical companies, having worked in the asthma and allergy therapy area with a number of companies including Fisons, Rhone Poulenc Rorer, Orion Pharma and Akela Pharma. Barbara has considerable experience in respiratory drug and medical device development, having been involved in bringing 15 products into the market. She has proven ability in marketing and market segmentation and raising brand awareness.

    Matthew Young

    Chief Technology Officer

    Matthew Young founded Oval Medical in 2009. He has more than 10 years’ experience working with a leading medical product development consultancy. Matthew’s work has encompassed all aspects of industrial design. Matthew is recognised as a world–leader in the design and development of autoinjectors. He is a regular presenter at key industry conferences and has attended review meetings with the FDA in Washington and with the ISO committee to develop new standards in this area.

      Elizabeth Jones

      Director of Finance

      A certified accountant with 20 years’ experience, the majority of which is at a senior level in Biotechnology and pharma companies. Elizabeth held the position of CFO of Acambis plc, with responsibility for the finance function during the acquisition of the company by Sanofi Pasteur.
